According to the Giving USA 2022 Report the total charitable contributions in 2021 increased from $466.23 billion to $484.85 billion, a 4% increase in one year.

At about 70% of total giving by individuals remained the dominant source of charitable contributions amounting to an estimated $326.87 billion and increasing by almost 5% from prior year.

The largest component of giving remained giving to religion and religious purposes.  It amounted to almost $136 billion, or about one-third of the total charitable contributions in the U.S.  As a Church, created to help people with disabilities, Joni & Friends is an integral part of this charitable drive.  Our Church's aim is to help some of the almost 1 billion people around the world who have some disability.  Many of these individuals and their families live in poverty, pain, and despair, none of which are necessary.

Joni Eareckson Tada, the founder of the Joni & Friends Church, knows better than anyone what it's like to lose (and then find) purpose in life.  In 1967, a seventeen year old girl, full of life and plans for the future, took a dive from a raft on the bay, where she went swimming with her sister, without realizing how shallow the waters were near the raft.  Her doctor told her that she was going to be paralyzed her entire life.  That dive had dramatically impacted Joni's life, leaving her a quadriplegic, in pain, and in despair about her future.

But over time, thanks to her Christian friends, Joni started slowly embracing her new life and eventually she found her purpose in life—helping other similarly disabled people "who often stay all by themselves in dark bedrooms".  First, in the U.S. and later, all over the world, Joni started helping people with disabilities start embracing life and even find their own purpose in life through perseverance, friendships, and faith.
