THe History of Numerology
Numerology and life path numbers first began back in the times of ancient Greece with the philosopher Pythagoras. In addition to being a philosopher, Pythagoras was also an astrologist, musician, mathematician, and a numerologist.
While Pythagoras is well known for discovering the Pythagorean theorem, he’s also the one who invented Western numerology. The people who would study the practice of numerology were Pythagoreans.
What Is Numerology?
Numerology is an ancient spiritual approach to uncovering some of life’s biggest questions. According to Aristotle, the Pythagoreans would use the numerology system for spiritual purposes.
Numerology is all about understanding the deeper meaning behind numbers. Numerologists believe that every single number has a unique vibration or frequency.
What Does Numerology Do?
These vibrations and frequencies give each number it’s own spiritual meaning. By understanding the spiritual meanings of numbers, numerology allows you to use the numbers to guide your life choices.
How Does Numerology Work?
What is numerology and how does it work? Numerology focuses on using the numbers 1-9 to help give you spiritual insight. By assigning meanings to the numbers, you're able to get insight about what your destiny holds.
Double Digits Are Rare
You'll rarely ever see any double-digit numbers in numerology. However, master numbers are an exception. You'll see double digits for 3 master numbers, which are the numbers 11,22, and 33.
The Meaning Behind Each Number
Now that you know numerology focuses on using the numbers 1-9, let’s review what each number means.
Here’s a quick breakdown of number meanings:
- 1: Power and new beginnings
- 2: Accomplishments and relationships
- 3: Learning and good fortune
- 4: Time and the need for others
- 5: Service and critical thinking
- 6: Beauty and harmonious living
- 7: Sacred spirituality and psychic awareness
- 8: Karma and hardships
- 9: Change and humanitarianism
In addition to using the numbers 1-9, you’ll also come across master numbers. Master numbers are numbers numerologists believe are especially sacred.
There are 3 different master numbers, and they are 11, 22, and 33. They get their name as being “masters” because numerologists believe they’re more powerful than other numbers.
Here are the meanings behind each master number:
- 11: Intuitive old soul that can deal with stress
- 22: Visionary that can successfully create and carry out big ideas
- 33: Teacher that possesses a rare wisdom
Master numbers get their power because they use a pair of the same numbers. Pairing 1 with 1 gives us 11, 2, and 2 creates 22, and 3, and 3 gives us 33.
Numerologists think that if you have a master number in your date of birth, you’ll have special abilities others don’t possess. For instance, someone with a master number in their date of birth may be especially intuitive when compared to their peers.
Create Your Number Chart
To discover your destiny number or life path number, you’ll need to determine the numbers in your name. Start by writing out the numbers 1-9 at the top of a page. Even though there are 26 letters in the alphabet, numerology doesn’t need all of those numbers.
After you’ve written the numbers 1-9 at the top of the page, start assigning letters. Begin by writing the letter A under number 1. Next, you’ll write B under number 2.
You’ll continue assigning letters to the numbers until you reach the number 9 (where you’ll write the letter I). When you reach number 9, continue with the process, but start back at the letter A.
How the Numbers Should Line Up
When you’re all done converting, each letter of the alphabet should correspond with a number.
Here’s a list of what letters correspond with each number:
- 1: A, J, S
- 2: B, K, T
- 3: C, L, U
- 4: D, M, V
- 5: E, N, W
- 6: F, O, X
- 7: G, P, Y
- 8: H, Q, Z
- 9: I, R
Now you can use the name method to discover your destiny number.
Find Your Destiny Number
You’ll only need to do some simple math to discover your destiny number with the name method. First, write your first and last name down on a piece of paper. If you have a nickname, or you’ve changed your name, use your birth name for numerology purposes.
Next, write down the number that corresponds to each letter in your name. Finally, add all of the numbers together. Let’s say for instance your name is Ann Smith.
You would write down the number 1 for A, 5 for N, and 5 for the last N. For the last name, you’d write down the number 1 for S, 4 for M, 9 for I, 2 for T, and 8 for H. Now you have the numbers 1+5+5+1+4+9+2+8, which total to be 35.
However, remember that numerology only likes dealing with the numbers 1-9. So the next and final step will be to add the digits in the final number together. So you’d take 35, and add 3+5 to give you the number 8.
Now you know you have a destiny number or life path number of 8. Once you know your life path number, you can look up what destiny corresponds with it.
